  1. This is incorrect from personal experience. I build muscle easily while overweight, 24-29 BMI. And I do so in a calorie deficit, training hard and lifting heavily. Losing the fat I find challenging. But it happens, albeit more slowly than I would like. You certainly can and should recompose rather than cut and lose muscle.
